Wednesday 29 July

3 days to go before the race. They say you should taper in the last days, I think, which I interpret as meaning do very little indeed. I follow this advice assiduously, taking care to move extremely slowly at all times. Weather forecast for Saturday: heavy uninterrupted rain and strong winds. Ah.

Good to be home, and we celebrate with a family trip to the theatre: Tom Stoppard's Arcadia. Saw it when it came out in 1993, brilliant then and brilliant still. On the way we drop in under the Trafalgar Sq plinth, where one of the 2,400 who are to be famous (?) for an hour courtesy of A Gormley is doing her thing.

Inaudible to us, but there is a live 24 hour feed on the net, where she is no doubt clear as glass. I apply to go on the plinth too, thinking it could be an opportunity to tell the world (far too little of which is aware of us) about Fairbridge.

Antony Gormley's plinth: fame for an hour

£10 today, many thanks to the lovely donor. Total creeps up to £12,063.33.
